I recently read a crime novel by Brianna Labuskes in which the main character is a forensic linguist. The book itself was ok, but as a language geek, I really enjoyed the details about how linguistics can be used in police investigations. I'd love to hear recommendations for other books where language/linguistics plays a significant part in the storyline. It doesn't have to be related to crime, I'm open to most genres, but I want the setting to be realistic. I'm not really interested in fantasy books about language-based magic systems, for example.

The classic is probably the short story “Flowers for Algernon,” by Daniel Keyes. After the movie came out they did a full length novelization.
I HATE the book I am about to recommend, but maybe you will like it : Babel by R.F Kuang.
The Knife of Never Letting go – its English – but some part is in broken English – blends seamlessly into the narrative (and is a crucial part of it as well)
It’s a trilogy though
Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, which the movie Arrival is based on, is about a linguist and the whole story centers around language. It’s so, so good.
