I'm looking for books with settings/stories like The Thing. I don't care if it's in the arctic or space or on a boat or just a guy in a cabin in the woods and the bad thing can be anything. The only stipulation I would put on it is that it isn't something mundane like 'her ex-husband tracks her down at a remote cabin'. I don't want to read books about things I could read about on the news. Thanks in advance.

I Who Have Never Known Men
One of my favourite horror novels is **Dark Matter by Michelle Paver**. It’s arctic horror set just before the start of WWII. A working class British guy decides to join an arctic expedition. I don’t want to give too much away, but this book is claustrophobic and scary in a slow, creeping dread kind of way. So, so good!
The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks is set on an isolated Scottish island and has a gloomy gothic feel.
Certainly a messed up, surreal horror experience.
