I really enjoyed “Louisa May Alcott” by Harriet Reisen, because it’s much more than a typical biography. There’s a lot about how the transcendental movements was formed, and Bronson Alcott’s role, and what pre-Civil War New England was like.

Can’t pick just one, I like things that challenge what we think we know about the past:
The Power Broker by Robert Caro
The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein
Reconstruction by Eric Foner

The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. Story set during the Great Depression. Texas family forced to relocate to CA to find work. She’s an amazing writer.
