I recently read Drive Your Plow Through Bones of The Dead by Olga Tokarczuk. It was the first book I read in ten years which is crazy cause I used to looove books when I was a teen but then many things happened and now here we are. I decided I want to get back into reading and explore the literary world. I’m very excited cause as silly as it sounds I thought I lost the part of me that loved reading and it’s good to know it’s still there. Barely but still.
I like:
-folklore
-mythology (mostly slavic, nordic, celtic but doesn’t really matter)
-rural/nature setting, more or less modern day
-feminism, well written female characters
-gothic vibes
-horror elements
-magical realism
-fantasy elements but not necessarily high fantasy
-mystery/thriller/crime
-animals rights themes, environmentalism

So, I’ve definitely got some atmospheric mysteries to suggest and some books with folklore/mythical elements but less so a combination of the two. But I do wonder if you might enjoy **The Gathering by C.J. Tudor**, which is an atmospheric murder mystery involving vampires (not the super campy type, imo) set in the modern day. I read it recently and really enjoyed it.
If you enjoy Slavic folklore, I’d definitely suggest the historical fantasy trilogy **Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden**. It’s a really beautiful series about a teen girl/young woman in medieval Russia who is able to see Slavic land spirits.
You might also enjoy **Mexican Gothic**
