I was chatting with a friend about how growing up, there were always these massive book series being talked about in the cultural Zeitgeist. In the 2000s it was stuff like Harry Potter, Twilight, The Da Vinci Code. In the 2010s A Song of Ice and Fire was massive, even though it wasn't released in that period, and we had so many Hunger Games like books that I can't even name them all.

But for the 2020s I can't really think of something that has become a household name. I know Romantasy as a genre has really taken off but there doesn't seem to be a stand out series known to everyone. I'm interested to hear what books people would consider for the 2020s

    1. Given how popular Sanderson is within the SFF circles, it’s absolutely Stormlight.
Love him or hate him, if you read SFF, you have heard his name.

    2. Colleen Hoover and Sarah J Maas are the breakthrough writers of the past half decade or so.

Nothing Twilight level, but these authors became guaranteed best sellers by their names alone.

It feels like everyone has read Fourth Wing. ACOTAR still seems very popular too.

    4. As you said, Romantisy has gotten huge, so maybe Fourth Wing or ACOTAR? But I don’t think there *is* something like that for the 2020’s, we really lack content.

Weirdly enough, I think comics and manga are making a comeback, but they’re so specific that none of them are, as you said, a household name. Like, 90% of manga fans have read Jujutsu Kaisen, but outside of the bubble, it’s rare.

Damn, we really need new books huh

It’s hard to answer this because I think the books that truly deserve to be called ‘it’ books aren’t very popular, so they don’t really fit your classification?

    6. Andy Weir for The Martian and Project Hail Mary. Both exceptional books and I imagine when PHM movie comes out this book will become even more popular
