I read Project Hail Mary this month finally and LOVED the plot and enjoyed a good portion of it but didn’t click with Ryland. I decided to read The Martian with the hopes that a new protagonist would make for a more enjoyable read but I hated Mark Watney as much as I think I’ve hated any villain. I don’t mind comedic relief or a lighthearted sci-fi but I felt like he couldn’t go a single flipping sentence without some sarcastic quip or jr high locker room humor. Not just him, but I hated nearly all the characters in the book.
So. I’d love book suggestions of books that might be similar in genre/plot but with better writing and characters that aren’t quite so snarky.

I would look towards women Sci Fi writers, maybe some of the ones here?

Totally get you Weir’s constant sarcasm isn’t for everyone. If you’re into smart sci-fi but want deeper, less snarky characters, try The Space Between Worlds or Children of Time. Becky Chambers also writes softer, more character-driven stories. Blindsight is great if you want something darker and more philosophical.
