Looking for sci-fi books (or short stories) that pack a punch – mind-bending, mind-f*cking, and thought-provoking. Just finished “To Be Taught If Fortunate” by Becky Chambers and really enjoyed the philosophy. Other sci-fi books I really love are:
- “Replay” by Ken Grimwood
- “Recursion” by Blake Crouch
- “The Man Who Fell to Earth” by Walter Tevis
- “Solaris” by Stanislaw Lem
- “Kindred” by Octavia Butler
Thank you in advance!

Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke made me cry the first time I read it.
Anything by Andy Weir.
I love the Expanse, but I don’t think it’s what you’re looking for.
Dune threads the needle really well though.
I also suggest The Best American Fantasy and Science Fiction (insert a year here). Anthologies are great for finding authors and magazines or other anthologies that have the exact type of content you are looking for.
*Blindsight* by Peter Watts
*Gnomon* by Nick Harkaway
*”Repent, Harlequin!” Said the Ticktockman* and *I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream* by Harlan Ellison
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is a classic.
