I don’t know if there’s a specific genre for the type of book I’m looking for, but most that I’ve come across tend to be fantasy. I love books where the math character goes on a journey, either literally or by exploring a specific place for the whole book, where every chapter is about the main character’s experience with a particular new place or character. These books usually feel somewhat like a setting or character study and can sometimes be lacking in plot, but that’s fine.
A classic example of this that many of us know is The Phantom Tollbooth. The Zamonia series is similar, but written for adults, and is also fantastic.
Other examples:
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern – not many characters but the main character explores a huge and varied underground world for most of the book.
Piranesi – I actually didn’t like this book, it was too desolate for me, but the idea of exploring an unusual world was cool.
The Odyssey – maybe the original in this genre, but I do prefer more current works.
What other books do you know that might fit? I’m looking hopefully for some bedtime reading, so maybe nothing too intense.
