I am a 7th grade language arts teacher implementing First Chapter Friday in my classroom this year. I want to get these kids excited about books. Last Friday, I read the first chapter of one of the I Survived books and they wanted me to read the second…and the third, and it was amazing but so many of them have read those books and I want to do a variety of genres.

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series had me hooked when I read the first book for school in 7th grade and those books are what I credit my love for reading to all these years later
Check out Alcatraz Vs. the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson.
His Dark Materials series. Be aware some schools do not “allow” these books because of “demons”. But they are incredible.
A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger would be a different genre and it includes Indigenous storytelling.
*Projekt 1065* by Alan Gratz
This is has a lot of action and a 13 year old main character. Kids love it.
Ghost by Jason Reynolds (fiction)
A Long Way From Chicago by Richard Peck (fiction)
My 6th graders a bunch of years back loved Liar and Spy by Rebecca Stead
The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill.
The Track series by Jason Reynolds. It’s a collection of MG books, each one focusing on a different member of the same athletic team. The first one is titled Ghost. Reynolds is a really engaging writer, I think they’ll love these.
