Hi redditors. I have a brutal chunk of air travel coming up – a 14 hour flight backed up by another 7.5 hour flight after a layover. I’m looking for a book that I can hit hard for this entire period which will just suck me in. Previous books that have hit the spot in this situation are the Scholomance series, the goldfinch, spinning silver (I’m a Novik fan I guess), sea of tranquility. I’m tending towards fantasy at this stage but I’d be so grateful for any and all recommendations!

    1. I’m an avid fantasy reader so I’ll split my recs into longer and midsize lengths!

      Longer (500+ page) fantasy books:
      – The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
      – The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi
      – Babel by R.F. Kuang
      – To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose
      – The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri

      If you want something between 300-450 pages;
      – Mistress of Lies by KM Enright
      – She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
      – Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson
      – Evocation by S.T. Gibson

    2. I travel for a similar length journey about once a year. Some of the books that have engrossed me during that time in the past include either big chunky classics, or spy thrillers:

      – The Hunchback of Notre Dame – Victor Hugo

      – The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana – Umberto Eco

      – Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy (or another) – John Le Carre – think I have read a few on my journey over the years

      – The Quiet American – Graham Greene

I’m traveling next month and going to spending some time in London, so going to take a Dickens I haven’t read yet, maybe Our Mutual Friend.

      Happy Travels!

If Novik did all that for you already, have you considered Temeraire?

Might also try Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey.

Trust me – The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. If you feel like, get the second one in the series too- The Wise Man’s Fear.

A looong (horror) book that I couldn’t put down was NOS4A2 by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son).
