I just finished Toqueville's "The Ancien Regime" and while I learned a lot about French society and the government before and after the revolution, it never got into the actual events and people responsible for the revolution. I wanted to start "Twelve Who Ruled" but it seems it might focus on the latter part of the revolution itself? Any recs for books focused on 1789-1799? I know this question has been asked but there are so many books on this topic and a lot of reviews don't cover subject matter
