My favorite literary fiction author, Ruth Ozeki, is an ordained zen teacher. Can you recommend me any other literary fiction written by spiritual teachers, hermits, mystics and monastics of any religious stripe…? Ideally, not looking for memoirs or biographies but solid storytelling craft to bring across insights.

She’s not a spiritual teacher strictly speaking, but Ursula Leguin based A Wizard of Earthsea on the Tao Te Ching. She published her own translation of it in the late 90s, which is its own fascinating story.

Not by but about: Breakfast with Buddha, by Roland Merullo. He gets maneuvered by his sister into making a road trip with her fiancé, who happens to be a Tibetan lama with very different beliefs.
