I've recently been reading some French and Russian classics in English translation. Comparing texts, while searching for the best translation, got me interested in the process of translating literature and the choices translators make. I also recently read Drive Your Plough Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk. In this book she talks about translating Blake's poems from English to Polish and gives some alternate translations of a verse. Again, I was fascinated by how different the translations were and what affect that had on reading the text. So, are there any readable books (mostly interested in non-fiction or autobiography/memoir but maybe fiction might work) for a non-expert on the work of translators translating classic literature, especially French to English?
