Title is silly I know, but I’ve recently read Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates and The Right to Sex by Amia Srinivasan and found them hugely insightful and mind-altering. I’m not looking for history or pop-science. I want things that really get into the issues and experiences of our time but in a timeless way.

    1. I will always be recommending Everyone Who Is Gone Is Here by Jonathan Blitzer. It tracks the immigration policy nightmare we’re currently living in the U.S. from the early 80’s through the end of the Biden administration and heavily relies on the stories of a handful of real people. It’s easily the best nonfiction book I’ve ever read. I wouldn’t really classify it as “history” even though it does trace an issue back several decades.

Radium Girls is also an interesting read about the case that ultimately created OSHA in the U.S. and spurred other worker’s rights policies. Really interesting and a pretty fast read that still feels relevant to today.
