Feeling quite depressed as of late and am looking for historical fiction/nonfiction of troubling times, events, uncertainty that display the indomitable human spirit
The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer is fiction based on her grandparents’ lives surviving WWII. It’s a touching love story in dire circumstances, a behind the scenes at a theatre story, a campus novel and a family story. It’s so vivid, it felt more real than my own life.
My nonfiction pick is The Courage of Their Convictions by Peter Irons. It’s about the people who fought for their rights up to the Supreme Court. Really shows the power of a determined individual.

Little Dorrit – Charles Dickens
Testament of Youth – Vera Brittain – WW1 autobiography of a volunteer nurse
The King’s General – Daphne DuMaurier – set during the English civil war
Cold Mountain – Charles Frazier – set during American civil war

A Piece of Cake by Cupcake brown
It’s an autobiography, she goes THROUGH it but she made it out alive and wrote about it

I’d recommend Beneath the Swamp’s Shadow by Kelvin Ray Oxendine.
It’s historical fiction, but based on real events: the Lumbee people of North Carolina, who endured oppression during the Civil War and then, generations later, faced down the Ku Klux Klan in 1958 at Hayes Pond. What struck me most was the resilience and courage woven through the story…it’s about ordinary people who refused to break, and that indomitable spirit really stays with you.
It’s not a heavy, textbook-style read…it’s fast, emotional, and inspiring, the kind of book that reminds you even in the darkest times, people can stand tall and win.
