So I read Babel by R.F. Kuang in July and the book put me in a reading slump and I have been struggling to read since then. But I have been wanting to read the Poppy War for awhile now but the mood never struck and now I am contemplating reading it but I am scared its going its going to have the same effect as Babel. Should I give it a shot or rather pass on reading it?

I really enjoyed the book. I believe the author draws a lot of inspiration from real historical events, so some parts are really brutal and intense, which I found to be effective for me.
So, I don’t know where your head is, but The Poppy War makes Game of Thrones look cheerful. It is a really good book, but it is *really* grimdark. I had to set it aside and come back to it later because the first time I picked it up I was very done with that.
I liked Babel a lot better…and none of this is criticizing Kuang, again, it’s really *good* but…
I guess my personal opinion is that RF Kuang is a very mid writer, and I wouldn’t recommend her to anyone. I curious about what put you into the slump — the content of the story, the length of the book, comparing Babel to other books, something else? I feel like there are many other options for better books that can teach you something about the second Sino-Japanese war (if that’s what you’re interested in).
I wasnt a fan but that’s an unpopular opinion
