Basically, I'm looking for a book with the vibe of Perfume, that manages to be both immersive in the past and make it feel modern at the same time. Lurid prose is a plus, as it taking place pre-1900s. Pretty much any period between ancient times and the Victorian Era (which I have less much interest in just cause I've already read a ton of historical fiction about it.) And of course, I really love the magical realism and the light speculative element of that book in general.

Not magic realism, but you might enjoy Golden Hill by Francis Spufford (18th century New York) and The Pretender by Jo Harkin (15th century England). Both rollicking, immersive novels laced with humour (and a hefty dose of bawdiness, in the case of The Pretender!)
