    Just a very general idea of what I’m looking for, I think it’s a popular formula in most media. Any genre but ideally not murder mystery, the weirder the better.

    1. It doesn’t necessarily fit the strange location criteria, but The City We Became ticks the other boxes.

      Dungeon Crawler Carl. I know it’s recommended everywhere, but I bit the bullet and started it, and it is absolutely as great as everyone said it is.

      {{Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura}}. Wouldn’t say super weird, but still fits.

      {{I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman}}. May not be the vibe you’re looking for, but it’s one of my favorite books and applies. Very bleak though.

    4. * The Invincible by Stanislaw Lem

      * Hyperion by Dan Simmons

      * The Galaxy and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers

      * The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennet. This is a murder mystery, but it’s weird so you may still like it in spite of the murder mystery.

      * Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer. *Extremely* weird.

      * The Tyrant Philosophers series by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

      * The Fold by Peter Clines. To be honest I wasn’t a huge fan of this, but it does fit what you request.

      * I second the recommendation of Gideon the Ninth

      *And then there were none* by Agatha Christie

      *The Haunting of Hill House* by Shirley Jackson

    6. I’ve been waiting for the right time to suggest The Extinction of Irena Rey and I think this is finally it! It’s much stranger than a murder mystery though the set up might remind you of one. Translators meet at the house of an author to translate her new work but the author is missing.

      It kind of reminded me of the show Search Party, where everyone seems to get crazier and less attached to their morals as the story progresses. Very strange and fun read

    7. Severance by Ling Ma? It’s pretty explicit what’s going on but it’s very much a group of survivors are forced in close proximity kind of book
