I’m relatively new to reading. I tend to have phases where I read a lot, but it’s been about 10 years since my last reading spree. I’m still figuring out which genres I enjoy, hoping it’ll entice me to read more. What’s your favorite genre? Any book recommendations for someone new to that genre? I’m eager to explore and find what really clicks for me!

i personally love horror, followed by sci fi, and then by fantasy.
Hard to pick a favorite genre, but I’d say either sci fi or dystopian. Great beginner books for each would be Ender’s Game and The Hunger Games, respectively.
For fungal horror: “The Beauty” by Aliya Whiteley, about a young man and a mushroom monster at the end of the world. Nauseating, horrifying, heartwarming.
For novelizations of classical literature: “The Children of Jocasta” by Natalie Haynes plays with the stories of Antigone and Oedipus in a really clever way.
Lesbian separatist sci fi: “Daughters of a Coral Dawn” by Katherine V. Forrest is a classic, with the energy of an early Star Trek episode
For military science fiction, All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka
For horror mystery, Another by Ayatsuji Yukito
For LGBTQIA+ Slice of Life, Camp QUILTBAG by Nicole Melleby and A. J. Sass
For Zombies, World War Z by Max Brooks
Litrpg— dungeon crawler Carl is the gem of this genre
Space opera- expeditionary force and bobiverse series would be top picks
Syfy – the martian and project Hail Mary
Virtual reality- ready player 1 and 2
Kids- harry potter
I think if you want to get back into the swing of things you should start with something short and fairly easy to read that also draws you in and concludes in a satisfying way, so my top rec is an Agatha Christie murder mystery. I can bang one out in just a few hours and they’re very hard to put down. Don’t start with something too dense before you create the habit!
