I’m looking for books focused on how people deal with the slow breakdown of the place they inhabit — this could be a country/city. How does one cope with the realisation that they will never see their homeland develop to its potential in their own lifetime? And how do they navigate this?

What a powerful theme to look for. I think a lot of people can relate to the heartbreak of watching a beloved place decline or fall short of its promise. A couple of books that might speak to this are The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy, which captures the pain and resilience of people living in a fractured India, and The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, which, though mythological, reflects on watching a world unravel. For more urban decay, The City & The City by China Miéville is an allegory for places divided against themselves. They all wrestle with the question of how individuals carry on when their city or country doesn’t.
