I wasn’t a reader until 2020. I then started reading 2-4 books a year. That changed this year as I’m on a reading spree that I never could have seen coming. It’s not a lot compared to some people, but for me it’s crazy. I just finished a novel and I need my next book. I thought maybe someone here would have something good based on my recent reads. Here’s what I’ve read this year and what I do and don’t like about them for reference:

    1. Dungeon Crawler Carl 1-4 (7/10)

Very fun, cool concept, great world building. A little bit too edge-lord-y for me at times and it got a to a point them I decided to break for a bit after 4 and then never picked them back up.

    1. Red Rising 1-3 (6.5/10)

Again, great world building and concept. Loved the action and relationships. I honestly don’t know why I stopped reading the series, but I haven’t thought about the books much since.

    1. The Hike by Drew Magary (8.5/10)

I loved this book. One of my favorites I’ve read this year. I love surrealism and the unexpected nature of the book.

    1. The Postmortal by Drew Magary (6.5/10)

Just finished this one 5 minutes ago. Really interesting look into what a world without aging looks like. I liked the unique, journal structure of it. Felt very grim, but well written.

    1. Reincarnation Blue by Micheal Poore (7.5/10)

Another one that I loved. The idea of chasing perfection into 10,000 lives when all you really want is to settle with the one you love was captivating.

    1. A Short Stay in Hell by Steven Peck (8/10)

Loved the brevity of this book and how much the concept has lingered with me. One of the most haunting ideas I’ve ever come across. Only book I have ever read in a single sitting.

    1. This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno (5/10)

Perfect depiction of grief. Put me back in the feelings I had when I lost a few people close to me. I wasn’t a massive fan of this book as a whole, but very well written.

    1. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (8/10)

I really enjoyed this one. I don’t want to put a spoiler for anyone who hasn’t read it, but a certain character that is introduced a little ways into the book that is central to the plot is one of my favorite characters of all time. I would go to war for them. The stakes felt real, the science is interesting but not overwhelming or too complex. Great book.

    1. Re-read of Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy (10/10

Favorite book of all time. The most beautiful composition of words I have ever seen. Each and every sentence is jarring and awe-inspiring. Absolutely horrific, but masterfully crafted.
