Yes, this is quite specific. Huge bonus if they’re immortal, or much older than the rest of the characters. Also, inhuman, especially if everyone else is human.
Crucially, they must suck. Not a straight up villain. Morally grey is good. An asshole, or self serving is good.
Someone who knows much more about the world or situation they’re in, and is extremely powerful, and also very unpleasant to deal with.
Examples across media of varying quality, hitting some or all of these requirements:
– Rose Quartz (Steven Universe)
– John Gaius (The Locked Tomb)
– Rumplestiltskin (Once Upon a Time)
– Hoid (Cosmere)
– Greg House (…House) (He only barely counts)
– Lucifer (…Lucifer)
I don’t like heavy romance focus, and the character doesn’t need to be the main character (and in fact it’s good if they aren’t). Otherwise, not picky about what kind of fantasy. Doesn’t have to be full fantasy, it’s just that typically to be somewhat god-like that’s usually required!
I know this is a lot, but if any major character in a book checks these boxes, let me know 🙂
