I've been realizing lately how little I actually understand about politics, and it makes me feel a bit silly. We live in a world where politics shapes almost everything in our lives, yet I don't have a solid grasp on the different ideologies, their roots, or even how modern politics works today.
I'm hoping to change that by reading more seriously about the subject. Could you recommend books that give a strong foundation across the political spectrum, not just one side, but covering different perspectives and schools of thought? Ideally, I'd love a mix of classics that explain the basics as well as more contemporary works that help make sense of current political issues worldwide, as unbiased as possible of course.
Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Thucydides _Peloponnesian War_ offers a lot of perspective on many aspects of politics.
I think we can often learn a lot from the past because we can see it “from the outside.”
George Orwell , The Road to Wigan Pier
Not really what you’re asking for, but the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett offer a very deep view into the motivations of man, philosophy, different models of government, religion, and a very moral and humane outlook on everything – I highly recommend! And they are hilariously funny, too, while also making you cry, at times (*cough* Nightwatch *cough*). In fact, especially Nightwatch with its fascist dictator and its secret police that disappears people seem very à propos these days…
