I need suggestions for a book that’ll help me escape/keep my mind off drinking between 4-8pm. I don’t expect to read for 4 hours straight but I need something to hold during that window that’s not my phone, a vape, or a drink.
I listen to Dry by Augsten Burroughs the audiobook in the morning on my way to work and while I think it’s fabulous, I’m looking for something like Into The Wild for adventure or something similarly travel heavy, about recovery or addiction, etc. Or just something gripping, adventurous, realistic, emotional etc
Thanks!!!!

Dungeon Crawler Carl, for gripping nonstop hilarious adventure, with the added bonus that several characters help another deal with addiction later in the series.
Demon Copperhead
The World According to Bob
Dark Matter
Into Thin Air, non fiction
Mans Search for Meaning, non fiction
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Guncle
I’m always ready to recommend Bloody Jacky Faber series, its about a girl that travels around the world and experiences the gritty history firsthand. It has an amazing audio version, too
Greenlights by Matthew McCounaghey
Just finished Joyland by Stephen King and liked it. Malcolm Gladwell books are good. I also like some Paul Murray books-The Bee Sting, The Mark and the Void, An Evening of Long Good Byes.
Try Devolution by Max Brooks. It’s an apocalypse/cryptid novel and it always soothes me when I’m stressed out. I believe they drink wine at a dinner party, then when the world ends the least likeable characters drink instead of dealing, but the MC and her spouse are more focused on coffee and secret ice cream
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas – a wrongly-imprisoned man seeks revenge
Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts – an Australian fugitive hides in India
Now I’m reading “The Store” by Stephen King, it’s great. I also recommend Pet Sematary, my favorite from King. Two of my favorite historical novels: The Doctor by Noah Gordon and The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet
“Irrational recovery”
Is on my to-read-list. People with all kinds of addictions has sworn by this book, but it’s actually about a former alcohol addict so right on spot for you. The author is against the classic 12 step Christian program and creates his own recovery.
River of Doubt
The Outrun by Amy Liptrot.
