Hi all! I am new here, I have never been much of a reader. I did most of my reading in middle school. I would a find a book, read the whole thing as quick as possible, put it down and not read another book for months.
Now, 34 with 4 kids who LOVE reading! However I am finding they are less likely to pick up a book because my husband and I don’t read, like ever.
Our local library is amazing, and free, and so we decided to get memberships and take the kids to get new books every week. The kids are loving it! My husband found a couple books that he checked out, I on the other hand wandered around and found nothing I was really interested in, but also I had no idea what I might be interested in.
Since then I have done some digging, I have found posts on facebooks and Reddit suggesting books or asking about certain books. I read the posts, the comments, and now I am overwhelmed. Haha.
So I find myself here, I have an idea of what I want to read but no idea which books fit the criteria.
Please suggest me a book that is on the shorter on side (maybe even a book with a few short stories) that pulls you in right off the bat, and has a true crime/horror/psychological thriller type theme.
Thanks!!

For horror, I recommend reading Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery.”
Easy no brainer reads in the thriller genre, I would suggest Freida McFadden. Particularly The Housemaid for a bit of popcorn thriller.
In this true crime/spooky genre I also enjoyed SunDown Motel by Simone st James
The Island by Adrian McGuinty was also fun, psycho stuff (think Texas chainsaw)
The Death Instinct by Jed Rubenfeld
The Butcher and the Wren by Alaina Urquhart had amazing writing and kept me hooked. Also, have you tried switching to audiobooks for both you and your kids? That helped me keep up my reading as an adult even when very busy. r/audiobooks has great suggestions if you want to peruse over there
Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams. Super quick and fun.
A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L. Peck
