A New England/northeast US setting is preferable. I’m not opposed to lean a little more on the horror side like Salem’s Lot or a bit more on the mystery side like Murder on the Orient Express. Something in between the two would be my ideal book here.

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
The Little Stranger by Sarah Walters might suit (spooky cozy, but old England). English country house, noble family in decline, things start to go wrong.
An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena (cozy spooky whodunnit, New England). Remote bed and breakfast, interesting strangers, things start to go wrong.
Both enjoyable, swift, cozy mysteries.
