Hey all, I have been thinking about branching out to genres I haven’t read before. I read Lonesome Dove last year and absolutely loved it, Shogun was fantastic, and even some poetry I enjoyed.
I’ve altars been super averse to anything that looks like Clive Cussler, John Grisham, Dan Brown, VC Andrew’s, Dan Koontz, Tom Clancy. They all have such a specific vibe and they seem so disposable. They flood used book stores, and it’s hard not to see it as an indication of how people view them or the genre.
It seems like people enjoy the genre and then just move onto the next book. I’ve never in my life heard someone say that one of these authors has a book that changed their life or affected them ever.
Curious thoughts here – if people who don’t normally read mystery/crime branched out and had a good time with one of these authors, or if they were really underwhelming for you.
My intuition says that this genre is like a milk toast version of why so many of us read horror, because it’s shocking and creepy and intense, but the crime genre is a lot more formulaic/less intense or memorable as a Stephen King for example.
Please share thoughts here, I don’t mean to crap on the genre because I really don’t have existence reading it – just an impression based on how books are talked about and the seeming lack of care of these books lol
