Okay, so it didn't all fit in the title: we're doing a presentation for school in theatre class. The question we want it to be about is: To what extent is the emancipation of women in history and modern day dependent on material circumstances? The thesis is that gender equality is not possible as long as the necessary material circumstances are nonexistant. Take the gender pay gap for example. We want to show this based on two works of literature. The first one is What Is To Be Done from 1861, in which a woman achieves independence by building her own sewing workshop and therefore becoming financially independent. We want to compare this (in order to show how, if things changed to this day) to a modern story in which (and I know that's a bit specific) a woman fails to reach independence or escape discrimination due to lack of material preconditions. As an example: a woman who has to stay in an abusive marriage because she cannot afford to leave her husband.
I hope I could make clear what I'm looking for! Thanks in advance for your suggestions! 🙂
