Fantasy, literature, & romance are my favorite genres. But anything else that may fit is welcome.
I don’t think I own a single book that gives me a true sense of comfort while I read it, and I regret that now. I really just want to relax. I want to feel consoled from a book.
The biggest thing I don’t want in a book right now is a high stakes plot that will keep me turning the pages out of anxiety. So no slow burns or thrillers please. I’m horribly stressed out by reality enough.

Have you read The House in the Cerulean Sea?
You might like one of Sarah Addison Allen’s books. Definitely as sweet as sugar but also fantastical. The Sugar Queen or Garden Spells would both be a good place to start.
The Music of Bees by Eileen Garvin. Probably not sugar-sweet, but fairly low stakes and I found it to be a comforting read.
Have you read Legends and Lattes or Bookshops and Bonedust?
Both made me smile a lot while reading them!
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern.
*All Creatures Great and Small* and other novels by James Herriot
Fried Green Tomatoes and Mermaids
Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck is my favorite comfort book. Beautiful writing, human connection, thoughtful and funny. Not long or bleak like some of his more famous works!
Rosamunde Pilcher’s The Shell Seekers. I read it almost every year once the weather turns and I want to be cozy inside.
Eva Ibbotson’s middle grade novels are my comfort reads.
I would go for:
– Anne of Green Gables
– Little Women
– The Night Circus (I actually think the plot is weak but the descriptions of the circus are enchanting)
– Charmed Life / The Lives of Christopher Chant
– Maybe “The Famous Five”, I really liked the food descriptions
