My 10 year old son, about to turn 11, started reading and enjoying The Hunger Games. But it was a little above his reading level. He’s in 5th grade, but reads at about a 4th grade level. Google AI is suggesting The Unwanteds series and he liked the description of those (but I’d rather have real readers’ ideas).

He likes adventure, action, plot-twists, nerve-racking stories. But he doesn’t like fantasy… He did NOT like the idea of the Wingfeather saga books from a friend’s suggestion.

He also really enjoys the I Survived books, as well as the Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, and the Wayside Stories books.

I personally loved this series at that age:

Gregor the Overlander series, also written by Suzanne Collins.

It is fantasy-esque, since who really knows what’s beneath the streets of NYC. But it has riddles that make you think, great lore and lessons, and is very heartwarming from a family perspective

    2. I haven’t read them yet, but Suzanne Collins (author of The Hunger Games series) also has a middle grade series that is supposed to be fantastic!

Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It’s a dystopian series but more accessible to younger kids.

    4. I loved the Warrior Cats books when I was in elementary and flew through the first eight books, just be warned there’s lot of violence
