      Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari is pretty good and very popular. If I remember, it goes from apes/early man to almost the present, covering the general creation of civilization.

      Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond is along the same lines and is a classic. It predates Sapiens (I think Harari actually mentions Diamond in the acknowledgments).

      I think some historians aren’t big fans of the broad strokes of both of the above, but they’re pretty great for big-picture history.
