Plot driven but not violent

I enjoy books that are plot driven, a good story, mystery, thriller, whatever, but that's not filled with cruelty or explicit violence. And it's not about cats or cooks solving murders in their spare time. Connie Willis books, for example. It's hard to find. Got any suggestions?
