Hello, I recently read War & Peace and this book absolutely blew my mind. Any ideas of pieces of literature to read next?

I read a fair share of classics (Brontë, Victor Hugo, Tolstoï, Dumas, Stendhal, Marquez, etc..)

I love historical fiction (Accursed Kings Saga of Druon, Leo Africanus of Maalouf), i also enjoy novels about the human condition with subtle criticism of capitalism (Steinbeck, Zola)

My favorite writing style is when your novel has a sort of magical sonority, it rings just like poetry in prose. Every word or sentence adds a complex layer to the masterpiece you’re reading. Idk if that even makes any sense.

Please share your recommendations and why!! I mainly read in french so I always try to find the best translation.

Also I would like to expand my horizons beyond the euro or anglo-saxon sphere.

    Thanks!

When I hear poetry like writing, I first think of Circe by Madeline Miller. It’s Greek mythology historical fiction. And the Song of Achilles is good too. But Circe felt really special to me.

If you like good prose and historical fiction, try The Tales of the Otori by Lian Hearn or The Hippopotamus Marsh by Pauline Gedge
