    Hello,
I just received some sad news about a family member with a terminal diagnosis.

I'll be flying out to visit them soon and looking for some light and comforting reading for my travel days.

I'm open in terms of genre, but I'd prefer standalone books or a short series (max 5 books).

    Thank you

It might be a little too close to home, but I found the magical realism comforting.

Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books – Kristen Miller

I wouldn’t do before the coffee gets cold – but maybe What You Are Looking For Is In The Library by Michiko Aoyama

The ones I can think of are non-fiction:
Bossy Pants is a memoir by Tina Fey about her pre-fame days.
Get the Picture, journalist Bianca Bosker imbeds herself in the New York art scene. Over the period of a couple/few years intern for self-important gallery owner, works for an emerging artist, works at the Guggenheim and more. She is a great observational writer with a great sense of humor.
Cork Dork by the same writer. This time she immerses herself in sommelier culture, primarily in New York, but with field trips to trainings, tests, seminars and big events. Again, her writing is great, which makes it a fun ride.
