Think: detective protagonist solving crime/caught up in something w genre overlap of horror/scifi. I did also read A Troll Walks into a Bar but it's a fantasy and quite light hearted (fantasy/detective noir overlap), so I'm just generally looking for sth a bit more grim.

Curse of the White Salamander by JP Clark sort of fits, it’s written in a hardboiled detective style, about an amateur sleuth (who’s kind of dumb) trying to solve a cult based horror mystery. It defiantly crosses over into horror.
The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett
The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch is police/procedural/fantasy about a secret department of the Met that investigates supernatural events/crimes. I’ve read almost all of them. It’s an awesome series and well worth your time.
