Hi readers!
I’ve never considered myself a romance reader — in fact, I’ve actively disliked what I’ve tried so far. Like many, I got sucked in by viral hype and felt totally let down. Here’s what I’ve read (and hated):
• It Ends With Us duology – couldn’t stand it
• The Stationery Shop of Tehran – didn’t care for it
• They Both Died in the End – flat, underwhelming, emotionally cheap
• Normal People – one of the worst reading experiences I’ve had
So yeah, not a great track record.
That said, I don’t wanna write off the entire genre just yet. I love watching 2000s romance movies (think How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Notebook, 10 Things I Hate About You), so I know I can enjoy romance when it’s done right. I just think I haven’t found the kinda romance books that actually click for me.
What I’m Looking For:
• Romance that’s part of a bigger story with characters who are deeply developed and emotionally layered
• I’m fine with intimacy as long as smut doesn’t take over the whole story
• Beautiful writing with real craft, steering clear of tired clichés
• No TikTok-famous or overhyped titles and authors as I’m tired of those
• Slow-burn, messy, real-feeling relationships filled with tension, buildup and nuance
• Open to LGBTQ+ romance — I’ve adored films like Call Me By Your Name, Carol, The Handmaiden, and Blue is the Warmest Colour, all of which are apparently based on books
• Prefer books that explore identity, grief, growth, or life transitions alongside romance with an honest ans heartfelt tone, even if it’s bittersweet or sad
Basically, I wanna dip my toes into romance without getting stuck in clichés or sloppy writing. I’m looking for something grounded, thoughtful and emotionally engaging, not just love stories that exist for the sake of being love stories.
Would love any underrated gems, cult favorites, or beautifully written romances that truly earn their emotional impact. Give me something that’s genuinely worth my time.
Thanks in advance!
