It's spooky season and I want to read a good mystery novel, but I don't like reading books that have cops as the main characters or books that romanticize law enforcement. Anyone have suggestions?
What Moves the Dead is a good creepy gothic horror.

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk. A good small town winter murder mystery.

Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann! A slightly goofy murder mystery with sheep as the main characters.

Maybe take a look at the works of Christopher Brookmyre. He’s written many mystery/thriller types based in and around Scotland. Look in particular for books where Jack Parlabane is the protagonist, as he’s an investigative reporter, rather than police.
