Hi all
It's taken me decades – but i've finally worked out the link between the fairly few books i've read that i haven't been able to put down and I think it's historical fiction. Novels based in the past that are either very routed in the history, meaning you learn a lot about factual history and get inspired to investigate further – but also novels based in the past that mix this historical grounding with complete fiction or alternative 'timelines' if you will! 'What ifs'…
The novels i'm thinking of are Ian McEwan – Machines like Me; Louis de Bernieres – Birds without Wings, Captain Corelli's, War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts.
I also include Philip Pullman – His Dark Materials trilogy. I could NOT put this down and have re-read many times. Although it's obviously complete fantasy, it does explore very real theological subjects and was absolutely the spark of my antitheist journey.
Would love some recommendations from people who also enjoy this genre.
Thanks!
