Hello guys, I’m looking for novels (not spiritual or religious) where characters slowly outgrow or question the ideas they were raised with — like nationalism, cultural myths, childhood heroes, etc. Something that explores losing certainties and seeing the world in a new light as you mature. Any recs?

I’d like to know if there are any that make you question these things but for teenagers. My 13 year old cousin is being brainwashed hard by my mentally unstable aunt and it’s really scary. My aunt has mental issues and has gone hard on religion to the point where she doesn’t take my cousins to school because she thinks kids are actual demons.

    2. Educated [Tara Westover]— a memoir from a woman who was raised in a family obsessed with survivalism. They thought the end of the world was coming and were prepping for it. It was an abusive household as well.

The author ends up with very little education/very low academic skills, but eventually pursues a PhD.

The family does believe in an obscure form of Mormonism, so there is some religious stuff, but the main focus is her pursuing an education and how that enabled her to escape the very limited life and perspective she had.

    3. This is nonfiction, but it’s really a page turner – Rising Out of Hatred by Eli Saslow.
