I can’t remember the last time I read a book for fun — honestly, I’m not sure I ever really have. I’m 38 now, and the last books I touched were probably back in high school or college because I had to.
Every so often, I browse the audiobook “top sellers” list, but nothing ever jumps out at me. My fiancée gets completely hooked on her fantasy series and tears through books for fun, but I’ve never found one that made me think, “Damn, this is good, I can’t put it down.”
If you’ve ever been in a similar spot and eventually found a book or genre that changed how you felt about reading, I’d love to hear what it was. Audiobook recs are fair game too

What kind of stuff do you like? any favorite movies or genres?
I started reading pretty young, but it started with the book that a movie I loved was based on… Jurassic Park 🤣 I absolutely love the book but objectively it’s got some science explanations that are not everyone’s cup of tea. I think my love of the movie was the driving force.
Now I have two sons who resisted reading, but I really wanted them to have at least one great experience with a book so I spent a long time hunting for something that matched other interests they had.
Even if the book is fiction, there is probably something out there that is about your own personal special interests or hobbies. A friend of mine is an expert on the Plantagenet period of English history because of comparing fiction to actual accounts.
Just one idea 🤷🏻♀️
If I was you I would try to think back of books you’ve read in the past and enjoyed. You can revisit them and see how they hold up or if you discover something you didn’t see before.
Next I would ask people to recommend similar books. You can always see if Ai has any suggestions related to the material you’ve enjoyed in the past
Another approach would be to search for subjects that are practical or make you curious. For example if you always wanted to learn more about… investing or “true crime” If you read something that you are interested or curious about you’re more likely to stick with it.
Once you get the ball rolling (so to speak) you will get momentum. In other words you don’t have to wait to find the perfect to get started
