How it sounds really. In terms of style of writing and quality, on a similar level to Madeline Miller’s Circe or Nicola Griffith’s Hild (the latter of which I’ve just finished). Magical realism or outright fantastical elements is absolutely fine, indeed possibly a bonus. A female/AFAB author is not essential but preferable.
I’m aware from a google search that there is a LOT out there but I suspect the quality varies greatly.
