I run an English book club with my ESL students (native French speakers, roughly B1-B2 level). I've realized that short stories are usually the best choice (good effort to payoff ratio if you see what I mean – you can have a lot to discuss after reading a short text). We recently discussed Zadie Smith's piece The Embassy of Cambodia and I was looking for similar recommendations. I.e. contemporary, fairly easy to understand without being too simple, featuring marginalized/ underrepresented characters/voices, lots to talk about for a short text. Any suggestions are welcome !!
