Hey readers! 👋
I’m reaching out in hopes of getting some advice from those of you who have experience with reading fiction and classic literature, particularly for someone in my position.
I’ve recently decided that I want to dive into the world of literature, especially the classics, but I’m facing a few challenges. English is not my first language, and I often find it difficult to understand the real message the writer wish to convey. After reading a few pages, I tend to lose interest, either because I don’t fully grasp the meaning or because I find myself frustrated with the vocabulary. Even after using dictionary I find it difficult to understand.
I’ve never actively read literature books in the past, I did enjoy literature during my school years, where the explanations provided by my teachers brought the texts to life.
I’m particularly keen on reading the classics, but I’m aware that many of them have dense or complex language, which only adds to my concerns. So, I’m looking for guidance on how to begin reading fiction. How to gradually build up my reading skills, or strategies for understanding difficult texts without getting discouraged.
If any of you have faced similar struggles or have suggestions or reading strategies, please help.
Thanks in Advance! Want to read like you'll someday soon; 🙂

I have experienced this, being ESL but now I would say English is my first language. I think you just have to find books you love to read and keep reading because you enjoy it and then eventually you will attain the skills and vocabulary necessary to grasp more complex topics/language.
Personally I wouldn’t read the classics and would stick to only books you enjoy until you slowly progress to them. If you don’t ever learn to enjoy them, i think that’s okay too!
Don’t be afraid to not finish a book if you dont like it. No one is keeping a tally, no one is going to tell on you 🙂
Are you looking for some fiction recommendations in particular?
