I’m writing a fantasy story where a young girl (12-14 years old) is suddenly orphaned after dragons attack her village. Her parents die protecting her while she hides, and as far as she knows, she is the only survivor. Her goal is simple: Travel across the country (think medieval setting) to where her aunt lives, assuming she will take her in…
The problem is I have no real-world experience with this kind of grief, so I can’t write about it personally (thankfully) but I would like some book suggestions to help me understand what this kind of loss would feel like from a child’s perspective and how they live, come to terms and overcome it. Children, mature or otherwise, are completely dependant on your parents for a lot of things, and being forced to survive on your own, with a treacherous journey ahead is a story I want to write, and read about. for inspiration and enjoyment.
The themes I’m looking for are a young MC, child-parent relationships, wholesome family dynamics and grief.
