Hello everyone,
I'm looking for something to read as someone who doesn't visualize things well or effortlessly!
I saw a post recently explaining how many readers get into a flow state where they visualize the events of the book cinematically in their mind's eye, and today, I was able to make myself do this when reading some storytelling portions of Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass. An excerpt below:
She fell like a maple seed, pirouetting on an autumn breeze. A column of light streamed from a hole in the Skyworld, marking her path where only darkness had been before. It took her a long time to fall. In fear, or maybe hope, she clutched a bundle tightly in her hand.
Hurtling downward, she saw only dark water below. But in that emptiness there were many eyes gazing up at the sudden shaft of light. They saw there a small object, a mere dust mote in the beam. As it grew closer, they could see that it was a woman, arms outstretched, long black hair billowing behind as she spiraled toward them.
Unfortunately, I could only do it in these particularly visual portions, so I'm wondering if you guys have any suggestions for books you found particularly cinematic and descriptive and could easily sustain this kind of reading experience.
To give you an idea of my taste, my favorite book when I was younger was The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly, alongside White Fang by Jack London, the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, and the Hunger Games trilogy. These days, I'm still most partial to books with some sort of nature theme; I recently finished binging on 100k+ words of very dense Red Dead Redemption 2 fanfiction, just because of its beautifully detailed descriptions of landscapes and plants 🙂
Please let me know if there's anything else I should add, as this is my first time posting here.
Thank you! 🙂
