Hello! I am getting back into reading this year and I have noticed that a lot of books I am being recommended/see online are not scratching the reading itch I’ve had. I enjoy dystopian, historical romance, fantasy, etc., however I feel as though a lot of the books I’ve read that storylines intrigued me have given me the same issues (poorly written, rushed plot, too much smut, using the same tropes and plot lines).

I would really appreciate some recommendations of books that you’ve read that you haven’t been able to put down.

Some of the traits that I’m looking for are as follows:

    • Well written. I like to read books that have good descriptions, world building, imagery. I also find it difficult to get into a book when it feels like it’s been written for high school freshmen grammar and vocabulary wise.

    • Romantic subplot. If it’s a romance novel, I of course do not mind it being the main plot, however, I am looking for books that have other over arching story lines aside from only romance.

    • Some spice, but not an overwhelming amount. I love the “Yes! They’re finally together!” moment and being able to read some fully written scenes 😉 but not every other chapter, PLS

    • Takes time to flush out the plot. I hate when conflicts, world building, romance, etc., are rushed. I feel as though it eliminates all tension that I look for when reading. I want to be at the edge of my seat!!!

    • I love political commentary. It does not have to be the main focus of the book, but nothing gives me greater joy than being able to dissect the themes in a story and analyze the authors takes on politics, religion, or other deeper, relevant issues.

    • A book with true plot twists!!! As a victim of BookTok, I have read so many books with the same plot twists and tropes that it is downright predictable at this point. I want my jaw on the floor, tears ripped from my soul 🤭

I have been reading a lot of books with magical components lately and I’ve been really enjoying that. I also like books about overthrowing corrupt governments, or even making changes within a community on a smaller level. I also am a sucker for historical fiction, especially romance. And I love strong FMCs! If you have any recommendations that fit some of these things I’m looking for, I’ll love you forever!!!!

Note Not a fan of dark romance, mafia romance, vampire/werewolf.
Also, strongly am looking for a romantic subplot

    1. only about halfway thru this book so i cannot speak on the “spice” (i truly doubt it has any) but the overstory by richard powers so far has been one of the most incredible reads of my year!! it has great political commentary and is just overall beautifully written

    2. There aren’t any good books in your genres. You are just starting to cultivate a higher intelligence. Almost all modern genre books are beyond terrible. Unless you change the type of book you will read, you are doomed to be an intelligent, lonely person.

    3. The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn. Many of her books include romance subplots and I love her FMCs. Honestly, I’ve loved pretty much all her work. She’s my go-to for historical fiction.
