Hello! This is probably an odd request, but I’m looking for nonfiction recommendations where throughout the story the reader has to “pinch themselves”, so to speak, and remind themselves that the events depicted in the book actually happened.

I just finished The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey by Candice Millard and absolutely loved it! I don’t typically pursue nonfiction, but after having it recommended to me by a friend, I picked it up. I found the book to read almost like a fiction novel in several places, and had to remind myself that this extraordinary expedition, co-led by a former US president, actually happened.

Additionally, the detailed descriptions of the Amazon’s plants and wildlife, and all their specialized adaptions, drew me in and transported me to a world that I am not likely to see for myself. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the technology, history, food, and lifestyle of the early 20th century.

So please, if you have any recommendations that can transport me to another world, back in time, and/or read as a story that almost doesn’t seem real, please share!

    1. Read her other books – all equally good IMHO. Also look at David Grann, Erik Larson, Nathaniel Philbrick, Buddy Levy. Tons of great narrative non-fiction writers out there.
