Like Dave Nicholls, Tayari Jones, etc. I like occasional romance books but can’t deal with mediocre writing in most paperbacks. Any good literary novels about the love one can’t forget?

David Mitchell – The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. Beautiful story of (among other things) self sacrifice and quietly carrying a torch til the end of one’s days for the impossible unrequited love who was only ever a friend at most.
