My son in law is 27 and he's wanting to get back into reading, he loves fantasy (possibly scifi) books. I would like to buy him a set for Chritmas but it seems a lot of the "fantasy" books I am finding are geared more towards woman and seem more romance than fantasy, which he's not in to. He's a huge fan of things like Magic: The Gathering, Dungeon and Dragons etc so maybe that helps with suggestions? I love to read but the fantasy thing really isn't my genre, lol Thanks so much!!!

Has he read the Lord of the Rings? Those come in all types of nice sets.
Sci-fi recommendations:
Project Hail Mary
Recursion
Dark matter
The Kingkiller Chronicles are fantastic honestly, supposedly it’s gonna be a trilogy of mainline books but it’s been nearly 15 years since the release of the second book. The author promises it’s gonna come out eventually but we’ll see. The first book is The Name of the Wind, then it’s The Wise Man’s Fear, and after that you got a few short stories following other characters from the books. But again I have to warn, it is a incomplete series so far but I do think we’ll get the third book eventually
Red Rising by Pierce Brown. It’s more Sci-fi than fantasy but it is my current favorite series. There are 6 books out and the last book is expected next year. Also Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman would match his other interests pretty well.
Loved the first book in the Mistborn series. Its got action, fantasy magic with some mechanics to it.
Really cool.
To really surprise him, I would recommend the “Powder Mage” from Brian McClellan.
It’s fantasy (with magic) but in a world in a Napoleonic era. I really enjoy all the books.
Or, you can look for the oldies : Michael Moorcock (Stormbringer serie, Hawkmoon, Corum), Robert E. Howard (all the Conan or Red Sonja Books), The Fritz Leiber Swords Cycle, the EarthSea cycle from Ursula K. Leguin.
Or, more on the humorous side, you have all the Sir Terry Pratchett books (and there is a lot of them) related to Discworld.
Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files. Urban fantasy, currently at 17 books, with the 18th due out in January, not counting short story collections. If you nor he are familiar with the tv series based on these books, don’t judge them as the story line didn’t follow the books very well and IMO really blew it.
L. E. Modesitt Jr The Grand Illusion. gas lamp fantasy, I’m nit a fan of his jitter books but love this series, currently 4 books,
Firefly, novels based on the one season of the TV show And the movie and written by various authors. Unlike The Dresden Files TV series which was awful, this show had a lot of fans, me included, used and the books are great books. There are about 10 books now.
The Curse of Chalion by Bujold.
The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind
Wheel of time or Malazan. If he doesn’t mind unfinished (other then the show) then game of thrones.
If looking for a shorter series then I’d recommend memory, sorrow, thorn or the first law.
Start him on Discworld (Terry Pratchett), or The Murderbot Diaries (Martha Wells)
