Dad is not a big reader, but I recently talked him into Remember Me by Lesley Pearse and he couldn’t put it down! I think he’s developing a penchant for grimdark history/historical fiction.
I’m a Fantasy man myself, so not my area really. I’m thinking GoT but on planet Earth – any suggestions?

I’m not sure if this fits neatly into any genre, but:
Solomon Gursky Was Here, by Mordecai Richler. he’ll either go “what the hell is this” and put it back down, or go “what the hell is this” and be unable to stop reading.
The first one that came to mind was Ken Follet’s **The Pillars of the Earth series**. Books that seem similar to Remember Me are **Ahab’s Wife: Or, The Star-gazer** by Sena Jeter Naslund and **The Luminaries** by Eleanor Catton. Also, **Wolf Hall** by Hilary Mantel has lots of historical political intrigue.
Maybe ask what about Remember Me he liked–the time period, storyline, vibe.
